UD - Energy-saving hard drives

Entire UD range moves to energy-saving GreenPower hard drives

With the IT industry coming under increasing pressure to adopt greener practices, for several months United Digital has been trailing the latest energy-saving GreenPower hard drives from leading hard disk supplier Western Digital. With standard 1TB hard drives consuming an average 13.5 watts, GreenPower drives require around 4-5 watts less, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by up to 84 kilograms per drive per year - the equivalent of taking a car off the road for 19 days every year.

“We’ve always aimed to give our customers the best combination of system performance and energy conservation,” says MD Hans Enoksen. “The GreenPower trial produced some amazing results - so much so that we’re introducing them across our entire RAID range with immediate effect. Not only do they reduce energy consumption by up to 40% but they run cooler and more quietly than conventional drives - plus we’re also introducing IntelliPark™ technology which parks the heads during idle periods, reducing aerodynamic drag and again, power consumption. For our customers and the environment, it’s good news all round.”
